THE EIGHT SECRETS OF MASTERING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE 

Do you want to learn to speak and understand a new language successfully?  Countless methods claim to teach the easiest, most natural way to learn a foreign language.  All claim instant, effortless results without memorization or hard work.  

But, whether you use a CD with a 5 page booklet, sophisticated software, go abroad or enroll in a local college, your success will come from one thing: knowing how to learn.  Everyone tells you what to learn. Almost no one teaches what the process involves.  This is the first thing I will teach you.  It applies to individual and corporate programs.

My name is Jean-Paul Setlak and  I started learning foreign languages when I was nine.   My parents, who both spoke multiple  languages, showed me how to learn them.  Of course, being young, I thought it was natural  and fun.  By the time I was 14, I had learned French, English, Latin, German and Spanish.   Since then I have learned to speak Italian, Hindi, Punjabi and Mandarin Chinese.  To be able to accomplish your language goals, you simply need to know how to learn. 

I have taught  thousands of people how to speak and understand  new languages.  I have taught on beaches, in corporate offices, on factory floors,  in trains in Asia, in chateaux in France and in formal classrooms.  In my twenty-five years of teaching, I have extracted some crucial principles which  successful language learners all seem to use.   This information is what I want to share with you.

Knowing a new language will naturally allow you to enjoy traveling and  interacting with a new culture.  You will be able to  connect directly with native speakers and be understood.  While traveling you can manage all your  needs easily: transportation, food, entertainment, shopping, lodging etc.  If you are doing business with foreign natives you will be able to communicate directly, gain respect, make your wishes known and understand how other cultures operates.

There are 2 ways to obtain this crucial information.

1. You can design a program for learning a specific language with me.  I will guide you through the learning process until you reach your desired level of fluency.

2. You can take a short course in "how to learn" with me. (4 to 6 hours)

1. Clearly understand what you need to learn to progress fast. You need an accurate "map" of the language you will be exploring.  This is a clear outline of the skills, content and time elements involved in learning a particular language.

2.  Learn how to learn most efficiently. There are specific  principles and techniques which facilitate this.  You take the various elements of your map and you learn how to master each one: grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, speaking, understanding, practicing, timing, materials, etc.

3.  Master the entry Level of the language.  With 200 basic words and the fundamentals of grammar and pronunciation you can begin to use your new language  immediately. This is not much material and it can be accomplished fast.  It is absolutely vital to accelerated progress.  Many people think they need weeks and months of study before they can begin to speak at all.  This is not true: you can get the fundamentals in a few days and be able to apply them immediately.  

4.  Learn how to memorize effectively.  There are several well-established systems that can be learned easily and help you do this.  Some use visualization, others sound games, proper organization, optimal review rhythms.

5.  Make the sounds of the language yours immediately.  Master them gradually and keep improving.  Good pronunciation will get you immediate positive feedback and create rapport with native speakers.  Feeling successful is very important.  

6.  Understand how to develop your fluency by yourself.  You learn a language alone.  Since 90% of the work takes place when you are by yourself...   it  means you are in control of your progress, not external circumstances.  People who have learned several languages do this automatically and efficiently.  This is what makes it seem so easy.  

7.  Use mental and physical techniques that enhance learning.  Here again there is a great variety of exercises and preparations available: relaxation techniques, yoga, qi gong meditation, visualization.  All lead to two things: being energized, mentally sharp and yet relaxed.  

8. Clearly understand what limits you: your negative past history, stressful present attitudes, emotional or intellectual blocks deeply affect how you approach learning.  You need to transform them as well as possible.  Most blocks are illusory mental constructions, but they can severely hamper your progress.
